Have you noticed that Koils by Nature offers fragrance-free products? Or have you seen other natural beauty care lines that are marketing fragrance free products? Then you might be wondering what’s behind this trend and if it's something you should get into or not.

You might also be wondering, “who would ever want beauty products that don't leave behind a delicious scent that lingers all the way across the room?” There are a couple of important answers to all of these questions. First, let’s have a look into the term ‘fragrance’ and what it embodies in the hair and beauty care industry.

What is behind the word ‘fragrance’ exactly?

Fragrances listed as an ingredient in cosmetics are typically made up of chemical synthetics. Many of these synthetic chemicals are actually toxins that have been a cause for concern due to their potential side effects. Side effects which have been linked to these chemical synthetics include cancer, infertility, allergic reactions and other negative side effects on skin and health. There are hundreds of synthetic chemicals hiding under the term, fragrance. And though we may have trusted this term in the past, we now know what actually lies behind such a term. The Huffington Post released an alarming article on fragrances by Ava Anderson, a natural beauty expert and safe cosmetics advocate.

The Potential Risks Behind Fragrance in Beauty Products

According to an article in The Guardian on the dangers behind toxic chemicals in beauty products, “Women, especially black women, have been found to have a higher body burden of certain chemicals found in cosmetics, including parabens and phthalates. Both are endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which mimic human hormones. Of particular concern to researchers, they can have effects at very small doses and have been linked to numerous health issues.” This is certainly something to consider and to question.

Parabens and phthalates are chemical ingredients which are often disguised behind the word ‘fragrance.’ Some people have started to refer to fragrance as the new second hand smoke. Many chemical products umbrellaed under the term fragrance can cause migraines, minor headaches, asthma, which has been linked to Aldehydes and Toluene (methyl benzene) has been linked to developmental and reproductive toxicity, and the list, unfortunately, goes on.

Takeaway

It’s important that we start educating ourselves about what we put on and in our bodies. When we approach each challenge in moderation, we can avoid growing overwhelmed and can have a solid grip over the choices we make. It’s important to eat healthy, in order to live better, longer lives. Eating healthy looks and feels different for each one of us. For some, eating healthy means eating smaller meals, while for others it may involve only eating vegan and organic produce and products. It’s up to you where you want to draw that line, in both your beauty products and the ingredients you and your family consume.

When we have a better understanding of what’s inside of our beauty products, then we can choose if this is something we want to expose ourselves to or not. In this day and age, with an abundance of information out there, it’s sometimes hard to differentiate who to trust and what the true risk factors are. This is where our choices come in. Now is when we decide for ourselves what we’re okay with, and what we’re absolutely not willing to expose ourselves to. All we can advise on our end is to do the research yourself and follow your intuition ALWAYS.

Have you been researching and reading up on ingredients? What have you found and what conclusions have you drawn? We’d love to hear from you and listen to the information which you may have reaped.
